Frequently asked questions about LifeInPocket

  1. Will LifeInPocket work with phones with integrated GPS function?
Yes! However, you must download the right version of LifeInPocket for your phone.

  2. My phone does not have an integrated GPS, can it still work with LifeInPocket?
Yes! If your phone has Bluetooth that can be programmed by applications, you can buy a LifeInPocket Certified Bluetooth GPS receiver at below US $45 from our partner
Semson.com. A non certified Bluetooth GPS purchased from other sources is likely going to work while they didn’t pass or go through our certification test to ensure that they can work reliably.

  3. My phone does not have Bluetooth and GPS, can I still use LifeInPocket?
Yes! You can set your “My Location” (MyLoc), use preset destination or contacts in your address book to get driving direction, search nearby business, get map and perform all functions that does not need real-time GPS information. You can use address instead of GPS when send location messaging. However, just like iPhone, you will have to get driving directions instead of one click to go navigation.

  4. Why need to know who's my carrier?
There are 3 major network types -- GSM, CDMA and iDEN. Phones of different networks are very different especially their GPS implementation. CDMA and iDen phones require various network's assistant data when calculating GPS fix while GMS doesn't. In addition, many North American carriers also require applications to be signed by theirs or Verisign digital certificate, otherwise you will encounter errors during download or when running the application on your phone. If your carrier is AT&;T while you select other carrier instead, then your AT&;T phone probably won't even allow you to download because it cannot recognize the digital certificate.

  5. What phones are supported?
There are over one billion phones shipped per year and 95% or more of them are Java enabled phones no matter they are Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Sanyo ,,, Thus most phones you buy from carriers or got it for free are supported. Since we are not targeting Windows Mobile, Palm, RIM and iPhoe at this moment, those so called smart phones are not tested. However, our subscribers have reported that their Windows Mobile phones for example Nextel i930, i920 works without any glitch because those phones shipped with well designed Java. RIM devices are Java enable but we have not embedded RIM certificate in LifeInPocket to make it work, RIM support is coming soon. Palm has some Java support while don't know how good the Java is. iPhone will support Java in June 2008.

  6. System complains my Gmail POP3/ SMTP settings incorrect?
Gmail won't enable POP3 email access automatically, you need to go to Gmail site http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13273 to enable POP3 access first in order to use email client to access Gmail..

  7. I would like to have LifeInPocket but I am stuck with 2 years contract with Verizon
Get an inexpensive prepaid phone to run LifeInPocket. To be safe, you can get a Boost Mobile Handset- i425t for $39.99 or less from our partner. Though the display doesn't look good while it has nice build in GPS and the unlimited data cost is $0.33 per day, you can add/ remove data access by calling Boost Mobile. Navigation is only one of the 12 features offered by LifeInPocket, LifeInPocket offers stronger navigation features than navigation systems plus location messaging, email, messaging, media, finance/stock, roadside assistance and much more. Use LifeInPocket for several weeks then you will figure out what to do with your portable navigation system.

  10. Do I stay in connection with the server the whole time while I am navigating?
No, only to calculate the route; which is generally no more than a few seconds. If the route needs to be recalculated because you have changed your plans or ignored the directions, you would need to connect with our server again.

  11. What are the data costs?
In comparison with other forms of data traffic, the LifeInPocket data costs are negligible. Significantly lower than the prices offered by other navigation service providers. However most US
carriers offer $15 per month unlimited data plan which you should take advantage of them. Some carriers are even cheaper for example, Sprint's Nextel network and many prepaid carriers charges only about $10 per month. For your reference,  iPhones rate plan started with $60 per month then goes up to $120 and higher.

  12. Why is LifeInPocket free?
By increasing your productivity and reducing waste in driving, LifeInPocket will reduce energy consumption and pollutions. Just like Google never charges you for their services, our revenue model is similar to Google's on-line ad while our ad model will be less intrusive than Google. Our vision is to make mobile Internet an important part of people's daily life. It's our commitment to protect your privacy, see our Privacy Policy for detail!.

  13. I only need a navigation system during my vacation or holidays.....
Since it's free thus it's your choice to use it daily or for holidays only. Check with your carrier, most of them allow you to subscriber and un-subscribe data plan anytime. (If they don't, you probably should consider finding a more user friendly carrier.)

  14. How can I report a problem?
Login to our site and click on “”Beta Feedback” to report your issue.

  15. Sometimes the system does not work so well.
This is almost always due to environmental factors preventing the GPS from calculating a correct position. For example, dense foliage on trees, proximity of high rocky cliffs, etc. could interfere with the satellite signal. Simply drive on until the connection is restored.

  16. In areas where my mobile phone does not work....?
No problem; the system will keep guiding you, as long as you started before you entered your carrier's covered area.. You only need a network connection of a few seconds..

  17. My phone encountered error during download
Unlike Europe and Asia, many North America carriers requires applications running on their phones/networks bear their digital certificate. You must download right version of LifeInPocket with respective carrier's digital certificates. Otherwise you will likely to experience error.

  18. Why you do not support Verizon phones?
All carriers and phone makers support Java programming language for their phones while Verizon is an exception. There are over 1 billion phones shipped every year and more than 95% of them support Java. Though Verizon is the 2nd largest US carrier while it has only about 2% of world market. If Verizon load Qualcomm's Java Virtual Machine as some carriers did to their phones then all their phones will work with LifeInPocket! However we will support Verizon's RIM (Blackberry) soon. The reason we do not support iPhone now to enhance iPhone’s features is also because iPhone is not Java ready.

  19. Do I need my account number to register?
No, we only need your cell phone number to send you download link for you to download LifeInPocket. The only exception is Next el which does not allow your phone to download directly from our server thus we will need your Next el account number to push LifeInPocket to your phone via Next el management server.

  20. I encountered http/network error?
Unlike your computer’s Internet connection, your mobile Internet connection is not as reliable. You are relying on cellular signal which varies by locations, interferences etc. and you are sharing bandwidth with people within coverage of same base station. Always make sure that you are extending your antenna to maximum and ensure that your antenna/phone is not blocked by other objects.

  21. Can make sure that LifeInPocket works with my phone first before buying Bluetooth GPS receiver.
Yes! LifeInPocket will work on your phone on every feature except GPS functions before you have the GPS receiver, once you received the receiver simply go to setting or run any GPS functions – LifeInPocket will search Bluetooth devices in the range to pair. You are now ready to enjoy the full power of LifeInPocket!

  22. Why the backlight of my phone’s display cannot be controlled by software?
Many phones provide API (Application Interface) for our software to control thus they will stay on whenever it’s necessary and depends on your settings in LifeInPocket’s display setting (select “Settings” icon). However, most older phones and some newer phones do not provide API for us to control backlight. If that’s the case, you will need to go to your phones “Settings” or “Preference” menu to set your backlight preference.

  23. I encountered problem when click on download link in text message from RoadComm with my iDen phone?
Most GSM and CDMA phones support OTA (Over The Air) download, while iDen phones doesn't thus you can use cable to upload from your PC to phone. For Next el phones, we have the ability to push LifeInPocket directly to your phone via Nextel's management server. Please make sure that you keep your phone on for 48 hours. Nextel's database sometimes does not reflect your data subscription accordingly thus if you don't see LifeInPocket in your phone's Application folder after 48 hours, you may need to contact Sprint to correct their database record or simply upload using cable.

  24. Why my Samsung phone's Bluetooth cannot connect to Bluetooth GPS receiver?
Almost ever phones Bluetooth can be programmed by software except many Samsung phones. We have told Samsung about their problem and now many newer Samsung phones have fixed the problem. Talk to Samsung or your carrier to see whether they have a firmware update to fix the problem.

  25. I didn't receive text message with download link?
It's likely you selected wrong carrier! Login to https://www.lifeinpocket.com/html/ and click on the “User Profile” link at left upper corner of the page to correct your carrier selection.
